bits of last night's make-up
printed on your arm
self-fulfilling breakup
or just a false alarm?
answers on a postcard
and though i saw it coming
i still did nothing
hand me the cards
lay them out in a straight line
so i'll play it safe
and you be my emasculine
hand me the cards
lay them out in a straight line
and ask for your blessing
if you be my emasculine
have i met you yeah and have you met me
have i met you yeah and have you met me
have you met you yeah and have i met me
have you met you yeah and have i met me
sycophantic sweetheart
lying on your breast
i pretend i'm sleeping
you smoke a cigarette
and all that fuss for nothing
apart from loss of innocence
and mild self-loathing
hand me the cards
lay them out in a straight line
so i'll play it safe
and you be my emasculine
hand me the cards
lay them out in a straight line
and ask for your blessing
my effortless emasculine
i haven't met you and you haven't met me
i haven't met you and you haven't met me
you haven't met you and i haven't met me
you haven't met you and i haven't met me

you make it look so simple
to do right in a world that's not
keeping everything in shot
all the while looking hot
but how much fashion do you need
to wear your heart upon your sleeve
like what if the colours clash
does pink go well with black
but there's a box beneath the stairs
where i keep all the clothes that i don't wear
what an ideal place for keeping mine
do what teacher says
sticks and stones and words can't hurt
heat rises, multiply first
boys wear trousers, girls wear skirts
jack and jill sitting in a tree
with no one else around to see
and if you don't make the grade
you pay for a comfortable grave
down at the graveyard in bournville
with a chocolate factory down the hill
it's a laugh if you think about it
thinking back about those two
one of those things that we all knew
or, it was speculated
that they might be related
jack i think is still alive
but jill's been dead since '95
though nobody knew back then
it was clear by two thousand and ten

every second is a picture less to take
nathalie takes her gun and shoots from the waist
everything exactly as she planned it
hair and makeup elegantly styled
but it's like they're from another planet
perfect emulation of a smile
and when she clicks the shutter all becomes worthwhile
as they stand there wearing clothes they didn't buy
nathalie pulls the camera down from her eye
she's a child with a kodak brownie
taking photos of the altar boy
she's on holiday with her first girlfriend
and she saw the world in polaroid
she changes the lens on what was once her favourite toy
steps off the tram, calls off her plans with her friends tonight
nathalie grows comfortable under the glow of the red safety light
and on the shelf, pictures of someone else left to dry
all she can see, new memories forming in black and white
making money, it's a job she can't avoid
vanity, and it's sold by fake humanoids
after hours in the quiet city
sees a face caught in a window there
points the camera at the reflection
and the wind catches on her hair
as the shutter clicks she disappears into air
steps off the tram, calls off her plans with her friends tonight
nathalie grows comfortable under the glow of the red safety light
and on the shelf, pictures of someone else left to dry
nathalie burns pictures of her rendered in black and white

Too Good To Be True

it's getting close to midnight and i'm weary
the talking fades, the evening starts to drag
we kiss outside the bar, you tell me i'm handsome
and what a wonderful night you've had
bet you say that to everyone
who ever turned you on
i won't be put upon
but isn't it fun to play along
it's too good to be true
and so i'll call an end
before you come here and you call it on me
it's too good to be true
so i turn around
do the sensible thing let it be
it's too good to be true
cos i know how it ends
and why bother waiting only to see
it's too good to be true
and so i'll call an end
before you come here and you call it on me
i know the rules and every way to play it
i've done the same so many times before
i'm sure you're well aware it takes one to know one
and i don't want to know one any more
so i want no part of this
and i've made my peace with it
oh hell i enjoyed the kiss
i'm not surprised to find that it
you throw together two disparate calibres
and look what happens, you can't say it's my fault
of everyone i've been through
none quite as frightening as you
i wonder if you're scared too
i'll take the bullet one of us has to
and eventually time will destroy it
if there's somebody there to enjoy it
so play on
